Colorado may become first to support preference programs

Opponents of a measure to end preference programs for women and minorities in Colorado hold a razor-thin lead in late vote counting.

If it holds and Amendment 46 fails, Colorado would become the first state to defeat such a measure.

Similar measures, sponsored by a California millionaire, have passed in California, Michigan, Washington, Florida and, as of Tuesday, Nebraska.

Traditionally, Vail Resorts Inc. has offered Colorado fifth-graders three free days of skiing or snowboarding at each of its four Colorado resorts: Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone.

The nation's aerospace industry is holding up better than the rest of the slumping economy, and that's likely to offer support for Colorado's economy.

Experts expect Colorado's aerospace sector to weather any downturn better than industries such as retail, manufacturing, telecommunications and construction.

They point to the lucrative, long-term contracts Colorado aerospace companies have won and strong Pentagon spending.

Ascent Solar President and CEO Foster resigns

Ascent Solar Technologies Inc. said Monday President and Chief Executive Matthew Foster has resigned but will remain with the company as a consultant for one year.

Chairman and Chief Strategy Officer Mohan Misra, 63, will serve as interim CEO, according to the solar cell maker.

Columbine memorial opens

LITTLETON, Colo. — Hundreds of people gathered under blue autumn skies Friday to dedicate an expansive hillside memorial to the Columbine High School massacre victims, after more than eight years of money struggles and occasional disputes.

The placid, stone-walled oval nestled in Clement Park is next to the suburban Denver school where two student gunmen killed 12 classmates and a teacher before killing themselves on April 20, 1999, plunging the community into mourning and disbelief.
